We are pleased to honor this year’s recipients for the John Martinson Honors College Scholarly Project Mentor Award. The award is given to exemplary faculty in recognition of your significant mentorship of undergraduate researchers, and for their most valuable support to the college's scholarly projects.

Dr. Craig Goergen

Dr. Craig Goergen is a Professor in Biomedical Engineering recognized for his detailed feedback and support while encouraging independent growth among his students. He fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment where students feel a strong sense of belonging, providing opportunities to connect with collaborators and fellow researchers. Dr. Goergen’s approachable nature, both for research and professional guidance, has made a lasting impact on the undergraduate research experience, empowering students to take ownership of their projects and thrive in their academic journeys.

Dr. Li Qiao

Dr. Li Qiao is a Professor and Associate Head for Engagement and Recognition in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics celebrated for her dedication to creating opportunities for students to explore their passions. She is known for offering support and guidance, helping students discover their interests in propulsion and sustainable aviation. Her mentorship has empowered students to find their paths and build confidence in their research abilities. Under Dr. Qiao’s leadership, the lab has experienced exponential growth, driven by her commitment to providing undergraduates with meaningful, hands-on research experiences.

Dr. Matthew Hannah

Dr. Matthew Hannah is an Associate Professor in the Libraries and School of Information Studies recognized for his dedication to teaching students valuable research skills, methodologies, and ethics, while encouraging them to explore multiple avenues for publication. His commitment to mentorship extends beyond individual projects, as he continues to guide and support his former mentees in their academic and professional journeys. Dr. Hannah fosters an inclusive and welcoming environment, embracing the diverse identities and values of all his students.

We are pleased to honor this year’s recipients for the John Martinson Honors College Kristina Bross Mentor-Mentee Award. This award is given in recognition of the outstanding research collaboration between a mentor and a mentee, and the reciprocal investment in each other's development. Short bios about each awardee are shown below:

Dr. Kathryn Dilworth

Dr. Kathryn Dilworth is a Professor of Practice for Philanthropy in the JMHC recognized for her outstanding communication and dedication throughout the research process. She makes the research experience accessible to everyone in her class, offering roles tailored to each student's interests and goals. Her willingness to guide students, especially those new to research, and her commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for all is what makes her an exceptional mentor. Dr. Dilworth’s approach fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment where students feel encouraged to engage, learn, and grow.

Dr. Diane Collard

Dr. Diane Collard is a research scientist for the Purdue Energetics Research Center recognized for her exceptional mentorship both during and beyond the research project experience. She is always available to support her students, answering questions, encouraging exploration, and fostering independence. Dr. Collard balances guidance with the freedom for students to lead their own research projects, helping them develop confidence and skills for future success. Her mentorship extends beyond professional development, offering personal support as well. She treats all students with the highest level of respect and consideration, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered.
