Honors Curriculum and Courses
Learn more about the requirements of the John Martinson Honors College curriculum and the different paths to earning Honors credits.
HONR Courses
All students with a 3.0 GPA or higher can enroll in honors courses.
HONR courses use innovative pedagogical techniques and engaged learning practices to develop students’ critical thinking ability, interdisciplinary awareness, collaborative skills, and research skills.
Honors College Curriculum Requirements
To graduate with an honors designation on their diploma, honors students must complete the John Martinson Honors College curriculum requirements specific to their catalog year.
Required Credits: 24 honors credits |
A. 2 credits of the Honors First Year Experience series (HONR 19901 in Fall, 1 credit + HONR 19902 in Spring, 1 credit) |
B. 3 credits of additional HONR course(s) |
C. 19 honors elective credits (refer below for more information on Elective courses) |
Scholarly Project |
A student must engage in a sustained project, either on or off campus, in which the student creates new knowledge. Results of this research or creative project should be presented in a public forum. |
Required Credits: 18 honors credits (*for students matriculating Fall 2023 or after) |
A. 2 credits of HONR 220: Community of Inquiry in Fall |
B. 3 credits of additional HONR course(s) |
C. 13 honors elective credits (refer below for more information on Elective courses ) |
D. Transfer honors credits (as applicable)
Up to 9 honors credits may be transferred from another institution. |
Scholarly Project |

Paths to Earning Elective Credits
There are 5 ways in which students can earn credits towards completion of the honors curriculum.
Honors Good Standing
Each student completes the Honors curriculum in their own unique way, but they must meet certain goals before they graduate. To be in good standing with the Honors College, students must do the following.
1st Year
- Complete First Year Seminars (HONR 19901 and HONR 19902)
- Complete at least 6 honors credits total in the first year (“First Year Seminar” is required; the other four honors credits are of your choosing)
- Meet with Honors advisor
2nd Year
- Complete at least 12 honors credits total by the end of the second year
- Meet with Honors advisor
3rd Year
- Complete at least 18 honors credits total by the end of the third year
- Propose scholarly project
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3
- Meet with Honors advisor
4th Year
- Complete at least 24 honors credits to graduate with Honors
- Complete a scholarly project prior to graduation
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3
- Meet with Honors advisor
- Complete HONR 22000 Community of Inquiry in the first semester at JMHC
- Complete at least 6 honors credits each year
- Graduate with 18 honors credits
- Complete at least one Honors advising appointment per year
- Complete Scholarly Project
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3
- Enroll in at least 1 Honors course each semester
- Maintain 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA
*If you have special circumstances that prevent you from meeting these requirements, please contact your Honors advisor. Students that fall out of good standing are still in the Honors college, and they have the oppurtunity to regain good standing.
