Call for Instructor Applications - Honors College Scholarly Fellows Program

The John Martinson Honors College welcomes nominations of West Lafayette instructors (Tenured/Tenure-track faculty, Clinical Professors, Lecturers and Senior Lecturers) for a term of two academic years, AY 2024-25/2025-26, in the HC Scholarly Fellows (HCSF) Program.

Appointment as an Honors College Scholarly Fellow is an honor that recognizes instructors with extraordinary dedication to and skill in undergraduate mentorship. An Honors College Scholarly Fellow will bring undergraduates into research and, similar to a Faculty Fellow, informally interact outside the classroom with (mostly) first-year Honors College students living in University Residences.

A Scholarly Fellow receives a $10,000 grant ($5,000/year) to enable the mentorship of undergraduates more formally in a faculty-led research, scholarly, or creative project. Scholarly Fellows will be invited to join the HC community of practice, which explores high-impact pedagogy, and will be welcome and encouraged to participate in the life of the college overall. Scholarly Fellows may schedule events and speakers in the Honors College building.

The appointment is for two years, with possibility to renew. The six-member HCSF cohort will each be assigned to one of six student “houses”; five are located in West Lafayette and one in Indianapolis. Should a team of faculty choose to apply, a “house” and its HCSF funding will be split amongst the team.

Responsibilities

  • An Honors College Scholarly Fellow (HCSF) will engage with residents of Honors College and Residences by informally interacting with the residents of their group, their “House,” at least once per month. An HCSF may choose to attend a Resident Assistant’s floor event to spend leisure time with students, attend campus events with members of their “House,” hold office hours, or meet for floor dinners, etc. An HCSF strives to support belonging and community among all residents, inviting residents to join them in their own co-curricular and intellectual interests. An HCSF coordinates with Honors College Resident Assistants and University Residences staff.
  • An HCSF formally mentors a group of Honors College students in a research or original creative project related to their scholarly expertise. The HCSF receives a $10,000 grant to include a team of undergraduate researchers in a faculty-led research project (supplementary funding may be available in the second year) of this two-year appointment. The Research Unit of the JMHC will assist fellows with recruitment of students for their projects as needed.
  • Projects that engage first-year students and students without prior research experience will be prioritized. Any area of interdisciplinary research is eligible. Proposals that involve environmental sustainability or engagement are encouraged. Informal mentoring and professional development for the scholarship of engagement for both students and faculty as well as the scholarship of teaching and learning is available within the Honors College.
